Out-of-class groupwork

Out-of-class groupwork involves students in activities such as projects, business games and case studies that are completed by students mostly in study time outside the classroom.  Many out-of-class groupwork activities are set for students as assessable tasks.

Examples of groupwork activities that can be set as assessment tasks

Organisational investigation
Students undertake an examination of an organization, or a specific area within an organization.  This may involve direct contact with an organization, or may be done using print and web-based materials published by the organization.

Real-time case study with students acting as consultants: i
Investigate current organisation problems/opportunities and provide feedback to the contacts within the organisation.

Case study
Reviewing a real or imaginary issue in a particular context and providing recommendations.  Students can be expected to apply theory from lectures to a specific situation.

Simulation game
Students undertake either a computer-based or desk exercise solving industry situations.  This is usually a task undertaken over a semester.

Presentation
As part of one of the above approaches students can provide feedback on group investigations and work.

On-line activities
Students undertake analysis or problem solving using an on-line forum.

Develop a website
Students studying Business Information Systems could be asked to assess a business model for an organisation and present a report in the format of a website that would be published on an organisational intranet.

Reflective journal
Students document their team processes and reflect on their learning in relation to task achievement and management of group dynamics.
