Preparing to teach with TBL
While TBL often takes the focus away from the lecturer in class, the success of the learning strategy is dependent on preparation by the lecturer. As students have an increased responsibility for their own learning it is essential they are given appropriate resources and tools to fully embrace their independence and autonomy as learners.
This section looks at different elements in the design and preparation for TBL classes.
In the best situation,
- students prepare individually for their group work,
- the groups work equitably together in class to complete the task and
- the in-class discussion allows for students to learn from other groups.
The longer teams are together, the more cohesive they become as they are motivated to find ways to listen to and draw out any and all team members who might have the missing knowledge needed to help improve the team score.
